I can catch all the gills I want when fishing shallow water from the bank out to 5' or so. However, deep or suspending fishing have me struggling. Whats your favorite technique for when the get down.

I catch them twitching a 1.5 gram jig down to about 25 feet. The key when using light jigs is to use a sinking line. It works out great. Of course this is jig fishing…..used to catch them same depth many years ago dropping crickets down that deep on the bluffs at Center Hill. But I much prefer jig fishing.

I saw some fish down 25' near sunken timber once on LS, thought they were crappie. They would follow, but only nip my jig. Sent down a wiggler on a jig POW. Big bluegill on. I proceeded to sore-lip a bunch of big gills. That was a good day, but hard to duplicate since. It is fun when it happens.
Good example of trying different techniques to figure out another piece to the puzzle. I haven’t tried it yet but a drop shot rig is a good deep water approach. I also like taking a beetle spin and counting down before beginning the retrieve. They’re pretty weedless and cheap if you happen to lose one. Good luck with it.Quote:

Here's my go to method. After the spring spawn they go deeper. Usually 18- 25 ft for me. I use trout magnets, or powerbait nymphs on a drop shot rig. Hook is 18" from the weight. This set up is a heavy producer for me. Occasionall picks up redear, crappie, and bass too.

Micro jigs tipped with wax worms work great, it just takes a while to get 'em deep. I caught some bull bream and nice shellcrackers along a ledge @ 31 feet on one of my favorite lakes. They're there every year when the weather gets right too.
