I did a little research and saw where Australia released a Carp specific herpes virus to battle invasive carp species. As the virus is fatal in carp, it would cause massive die offs. Does anyone know if this was successful?

I'm not sure I would like the idea of releasing a virus into the waters. Regardless of whether or not they think is was safe for humans things can mutate and got horribly wrong. My children swim in those waters, I would prefer they don't release a disease into it. Just too much to risk, and I don't trust them enough to be 100% certain it will never affect humans or other wildlife at some point.
I would prefer if they go the science route that they come up with the sterilization approach.
I had a Biologist in Frankfort tell me the virus would kill the AC. But the only way humans could get it is by eating the AC. They thought about introducing the virus to kill the AC. But was afraid if somebody at a AC and caught it. F@W would get sued.
My concerns are similar to yours. Transferable to humans? Transferable to other fish species? Always a potential for mutation as this is common in virus. Difficult to predict the long term outcomes for sure.Quote:

In reading I found this report on controlling Asian Carp. Interesting read. And action plan created in 2017.

Purdue University has been trying to come up with a way to control Asian Carp. They published a report that electric barriers worked but would kill everything in the water including shocking humans. They have been studying parasites and viruses that can effect Asian Carp, and find Asian Carp don’t have many if any parasites that affect their mortality as well as viruses except that herpes virus and are working in a variant of it but with no success for specifically targeting Asian Carp only. Not a lot of options out there as of yet but a lot of plans in the works on above read and various ways being used. But a lot of organizations concerned and working on the Asian Carp problem. U of Ill. Is working hard on solutions also.

Sad, but it's pretty much certain that the KY/Barkley lake system will be no more than a AC Lake system for a few years. I wish the Crappie/LM Bass/Catfish would develop an appetite for AC fry. Seems the Shad are way down or about gone. Looks like we will have two lakes full of food with the AC, unless we find a way to kill them off. Just got to get a system set up to fairly pay the commercial fisherman and the processing centers to take out the tons of AC in the lake now unless we can kill all of them. They will be there from now on. I hope to see a shocking report showing ALL fish per Acre of water. I'm just guessing, and I'm sure several will not agree, but I think the AC are 75-90% of the fish per weight per Acre in the Lakes.
