Is there any way to buy a power cord with converter so i can play with this in the house. Would like to mess with it before it gets warm and try to learn all the functions. Thanks.

You can send it to me and I will try it out for you :biggrin But seriously, there are several ways to power the unit. I use this converter except when I am doing a software update and then I have it on a battery. Amazon.com: Schumacher PC-6 120AC to 6A 12V DC Power Converter: Automotive This one is large enough to power more than one if you want.
Buy an extra power cord and wire a permanent connection .... play with it in full simulator mode .... and watch online videos.
BobB thank you sir!! Well depending on where you are at we might not be that far away!!!! I am still debating on a 9,10 or 12. That is a ton of money for a fish finder and i dont always get out as much as i want. I know i want something that will be around a long time and i hope the helix series wont go away in short term and as much tech as i can upfront. Do u know if anyone makes maps for rivers and is there a way to figure out what maps come with the finder. Dont want to order maps until i know what i have. Thanks for any help we normaly use the cheep finders just for depth.
I know you are contemplating spending a lot of money, but I am going to suggest you spend a little more to get a whole lot more. There are people who will teach you how to set-up and use your FF. The ones I have spoken to charge between $200 - $400 for the service and the I have talked to guys who said it was worth every penny. They will find out what kind of fishing you do and show you how to get the most out of your equipment. While the expense is an addition to what you are already spending, it is better to be able to use all the features you are paying the BIG BUCKS for. It would be a shame to spend $1000 and only get the performance of a $90 2D unit because of the complexity of your new unit.
Ask around for opinions of folks who have had the training to see what they say about the worth.

The maps that come with the unit aren't going to be very useful.....You could check into Navionics to see what the mapping looks like for the river you are interested in. You can look at their web app to see what the mapping would look like. https://webapp.navionics.com/#@6&key=s%7BimFrr_dPQuote:

It is also possible Lakemaster has mapped the area you are interested in, but it's a little harder to tell what your are going to get. Lakemaster has more features for Humminbird if they have good mapping of the area you are interested in.
The proprietary maps on humminbird units basically give you an outline of the lake and a way to mark gps waypoints. The lakemaster chips are awesome with humminbird units and are far better maps. They also let you do thing like highlight certain depths and compinsate for lake levels. The bad part is they pretty much only have maps for major lakes.
Navionics isn't as good but they have mapped a lot more water including rivers.

Thanks for all the info guys. Think i have decided to just bite the bullet, settled on the Helix 12 SI. Its way more then i wanted/planned on spending but think i will be alot happier with it. Now i just have to do the research on the maps and figure out what i am going to do there. After i spend this much i will make darn sure i use it more!!!!
