trolling question

with all this rain headn to the lake if I get to go sun or mon gona get outa my comfort zone & try trolling again- been 5-6 time trying trolling & aint caught a fish yet but think I got the tackle & rigging issues worked out(been looking @ youtube)- ive always caught the most crappies in coves the wind was blowing into so why couldn't you start back in one & work out against the wind- seems like with the trolling motor you could control boat direction & speed better working into the wind- also if trying that which would be better spiderrigging off the bow or long lining off the stern? Im gona keep @ this till I figure it out!:scratchhead

With the conditions that you stated, I would long line behind the boat. Just my 2 cents. B-

Both techniques will work, but sometimes they want the bait moving fast. If you're going to try both, start with long-lining. It's easier to set up and take down.

I think you will find boat control easier going with the wind. Now if the wind pushes you at a higher speed than desired, you may need a drift sock dragging. Two weeks ago, I had good success for numbers, but not size, longlining the bay type area at the runway end. Five to seven feet of water, around 1 MPH. Kalin's money jig.

thanks guys- ive got a drift sock I use when drifting for cats figured itd be handy- from what ive read long line off the back outa be 1.5-2.5 mph & spider rig off bow outa be 0.5-1.5 mph- sound bout right to ya'll?

1.5-2.5 seems way to fast but if the fish really are active I guess it would work. I wouldnt go over 1.3 and that seems fast to me. You tried bright Pink/Chartreuse/redwhite hair jigs tipped with minnows under a 3/8 ounce wieght spider rigging in front? I really like .4 mph for that.7 at the most.

I think the most popular speeds for long lining are .8 to 1.2 mph. CF

thanks guys - believe now may have been going too fast for spider rigging- but from what im hearing now its time to switch to long -line 'n so speeds need o be closer to what I was running - don't matter because going tomorrow & im gona hunt the 2-5' of water - single pole in hand jig fishing- my first love of crappie fishing- aint nothing like seeing a big ol crappie come out of a brush pile or beside a stump & inhale your jig before you feel anything!!

I caught both my two largest crappie ever (2lb 9oz) long lining around .8mph.

Spider rigging speeds most of the time run .5 or slower. You will cover a lot more water long lining.CF
