I have decided to buy myself a nice jig pole. While I am enjoying this "spider rigging", I miss the old "thump." I have never owned a nice jig pole before, and was going to get one for myself and my dad for our christmas presents. What would you suggest?

I have 2 Sam Heaton 11'er, but just started using the 11' Ozark with the rear reel seat. It's a great rod, and well balanced. Might try one while they're on sale. They have a titanium tip, and are extremely sensitive.

I single pole jig year round January 1st to December 31st. I am not knocking spider trolling, I've got two rod racks and several trolling rods and this technique works good at the right time and I'm not afraid to use it. But my love and bread n butter is single pole jigging with plastics. I love to feel the thump. My favorite three rods each have their place and I have tried many different ones and I have settled on these three as favorites. For shallow fish I love the brush cutter rods from BNM, good length to get away from the boat and most importantly backbone to set the hook. For deep water I use a Shimano crucial crankbait rod in med-heavy...... Yes I use a med-heavy rod. Why because I can put a different action on the jig with a stiff rod and set the hook in that special place in a crappies mouth. My finesse rod for mid to deep water is a crappie maxx from bass pro, I use a different weight setup on the crappie maxx and get a different action. The flip side is I fish clear water lakes and one ultra clear water lake so I typically fish deeper than other crappie lakes. I have personally never fished the Sam Heaton super sensitive but it does feel good and very close to the crappie maxx. My technique is really suited for clear water lakes. I will tell you it ain't for stained or dingy water lakes like Grenada, that's a testimonial not an opinion.

You would be happy with the Sam heaton or the Ozark. I have both and like them both. Just depends on your preference. Comparing the 12 mid seats, the heaton is a little more sensitive and the Ozark has a little less give in the top section which is good for shallow fish that you need to horse out. I only have the ozarks in rear seat for wading so I can't compare against the heaton.
