Fishing structure with electronics.......

Being "dock shooter" mainly, i was just wondering how you would "know" you are on a brush pile or some sort of structure that you may have found with your electronics. I have really never tried to "jig" fish something that I may have trolled over.

I know this may sound "dumb" to most, but how do you know you are "hovering" over the pile , when your electronics will continue to scroll. I mean, you can't troll over a tree top , mark it, and go back and continually see it on your electronics......Can you?

Not sure if I am getting my point across, any information is appreciated. I have a hb 798 on console and terrova with a hb598, and just trying to learn how to use them.

Your DF may continue to "scroll" ... but it will also continue to show you the brushpile (depending on the type of unit & your ability to maintain boat position).

While I really don't "hover over" a brushpile, that I may encounter, seeing as how I mostly cast jigs (rather than vertical jig them) ... I have three options to pinpoint that brushpile, in order to cast to it.

Option 1 - marker bouy (placed well off to one side of the brushpile)
Option 2 - GPS waypoint on my DF (split screen showing waypoint/route & depth/down image)
Option 3 - mentally triagulate the spot (using boat position & objects on the near shoreline)

Depending on your DF's capabilities ... yes, you can "troll over a tree top, mark it, and go back and continually see it .... " You would have to have GPS capability, in order to "mark it" (with your electronics) ... but Options 1 & 3 can be used, if you do not.

Yes Pappy....I do have gps on both units....Your information is very helpful. Thank you! I normally cast myself, just wondering how people "jig" fish a brush pile for instance at 20-30 feet deep.... I guess the marking with a bouy and easing back close to it makes sense.

After seeing the structure, drop marker a little up wind then face into wind and cast and count down to top of brush and slowly reel,after that ,get over brush watching DF and let jig down to brush,you should be able to see jig if you put DF on manual and turn sensitivide up to about 75-80,you may even see fish hit jig,unless you have to put jig inside brush.With 798 ,if you go over brush slow you may see fish in brush if it is many there

Hawgdog ... for most of my jig casting years, I've only had the low end 2d depthfinders. So, when casting towards a spot that was relatively close to shore, I was most likely to use the triangulation method (Option 3) ... and only when faced with staying on a spot that was well offshore & in open water, would I use a marker bouy (Option 1).
Now that I have a DF w/GPS ... I'm in the beginning stages of learning how to mark a waypoint & return to it or stay on it. Actually, I haven't even tried it, yet. What fishing I have done since mounting the DF/GPS unit, has been on familiar waters & around obvious cover. But, with the help of other members, more familiar with GPS use, and/or owners of the same DF unit that I have (and the thread I started, at the top of this page) ... I hope to shorten the learning curve.
The good thing about having learned/depended on the other two options ... is that I can use them in conjuction with my GPS system, or in place of it (should something happen).

yes you can troll over the brush mark it come back and stay on it by keeping it on the screen, just because the unit is "scrolling" it is just updating it with new data, if you are over the brush then that is what you will continously see on your screen, you can even drop your jig straight down and watch it fall and sit there and watch it dance and even watch a fish come up and hit it. assuming your sensitivity is set high enough to see your jig and it is within the cones coverage area. great fun when they are deep enough not to spook by sitting directly over them.
