Powder Paint Issues

I painted around 20 jigs in the past 2 days using both white and red powder paint and have coneheads on all of them. I'm sure most of what I'm doing is wrong but, I used a lighter to heat the jig (big no no?). I dipped them straight into the jar and put them into a cheap toaster oven that doesn't have a temperature gauge... I know I need to buy one that shows what degree's I'm curing them at. But, more than likely I put to much paint on them? or the oven temp is to high? Also I hung the jigs from their hooks is there a different way I need to hang them? Kind of frustrating seeing all the nice round powder painted jigs :P Any help would be appreciated!

idk i used a lighter to powder paint my jig heads till i got a heat gun but i didnt burn them or any thing. but i dont cure them after i get the paint on them

Originally I thought I wasn't heating them enough because they looked really powdery like still after I put the coat on now after I paint them they are very glossy... Should I be painting them to where they are kind of still powdery looking and then the curing in the oven will gloss them?

You're getting the jighead too hot which melts too much paint on when you dip, so when you heat it back up in the oven while curing it forms the drip on the nose.

When your heat is perfect you can watch the paint go from rough to gloss as soon as you pull it out of the powder jar. It's better to be slightly cool where a good layer of paint sticks but doesn't gloss over, since then all you need to do is hold it back over your heat source for a few seconds and it'll gloss right up for you.

Instead of a lighter I would get a plain unscented candle.

Okay, I'll give it a try with the unscented candle... Also, should I be trying to hang them in the oven a different way or is it just all about not getting to much paint on the jig?

It's all about not getting too much pp on the jig head....

I saw on youtube about how a guy made a fluid bed for powder paint... I may look into making one of those but, does it really make that big of a difference?

If you've got the amount of paint right and temp correct, it won't matter how you hang them. Sometimes you just have to go through several heads until you get it like you want it. We've all done it.

I made one, it works pretty good on most of the paints, still having trouble with the black. I tried different methods for heating the jigs, best one for me was Skips suggestion of an alcohole burner.

Not feeling good so here is my quick reply.

You have to fluff the paint either with w fluid bed or stir or something after every few heads.

Don't use a lighter or a candle!

I don't use a heat gun because for me they are too hot and too loud. I use a alcohol lamp which does't put off soot like the other things.

Figure out how long each different size hard needs to be in the flame to give you a good coat, not to thick nor to thin. If you see smoke it's too hot.
