What are the best tipups for to use? Is there one that sets the hook or are they all free spool?:confused:
most all tip ups are free spool but they have a tipup called a slammer that you set a regular pole or and jigging pole into which attaches to a small clip so the pole is then pre loaded and when a fish takes the bait and pulls the clip releases the line hence letting the pole snap up and hopefully setting the hook .

Here is a slammer I made for perch and crappies, it sets the hook for you.
old thread but I'm getting in pre-ice fishing mode. Most guys around here go with tip downs for crappie.
