tip ups

What are the best tipups for to use? Is there one that sets the hook or are they all free spool?

most all tip ups are free spool but they have a tipup called a slammer that you set a regular pole or and jigging pole into which attaches to a small clip so the pole is then pre loaded and when a fish takes the bait and pulls the clip releases the line hence letting the pole snap up and hopefully setting the hook .

old thread but I'm getting in pre-ice fishing mode. Most guys around here go with tip downs for crappie.
