Question for Canepole

Tom,
I am interested in buying a device that I could use Ozi CE/ KYhydrografx
maps on Ky and Barkley lakes. I had (about 6/7 years ago) older Ipaq that I used with a older Lowrance handheld GPS. Ipaq is so outdated that I can't buy batteries and I think it may be "shot" anyway. As you know, being able to see in the sunlight is important. I quit fishing Ky/Barkley when gas got so high but I would like to start again. I know that you had figured out how to use these maps with some Garmin unit a couple of years ago. Did you ever get that working well? Any ideas?

Yes. I can put any raster image map on a Garmin if it has a data card. I have a Garmin 276c with a 64 Meg data card that I put North/South Big Sandy Ky Hydrograpx Maps in the data memory. Works fine.

I can scan any image map, then calibrate the map, then vectorized the map, then upload to the Garmin in image format.

I have used the Ozi CE program but I don't really have a clue what you are doing by vectorizing the map. I will try to contact Pat H and see if he can explain to me what you are doing before I start asking you dumb questions. The Garmin unit looks and sounds great. Hopefully (with your help please) I can work something out.

Hello Tom, While on the subject of transferring maps to a Garmin chip, I wonder if you could help me? I have a Garmin 498C, Mapsource program, a blank card for loading maps, and the computer and power cable. One particular small lake near me is not on the Mapsource program. It is relatively new, so Mapsource just shows land there. If I choose to view in Google Earth, the lake shows up. Is there any way to use the Google Earth image and load it on my Garmin card?
I basically just would like the lake and shoreline to show up, rather than everything on the map showing up as land. Also, I'm sure you are aware that every time you load a map on a Garmin card it erases previous maps. So if it was possible to use the Goggle image, I'd like to save it on the computer to reload when needed. If you are interested in checking into this, on the Mapsource Hotspots eastern US program, you would search for Coatesville, PA. Brandywine creek will flow thru the town, and if you follow it NW a couple miles it runs thru Hibernia Park. If you Google Earth that image, it will show the lake. Thanks!!

I prob can do this since you have the Garmin data card. It will take a little figuring out though. Worst part is calibration.

I know nothing about the 498c. I do use a garmin GPSmap 76. If they use the same map format and all you need is the lake outline try here

GPSFileDepot - Garmin Compatible Custom Maps

They are topo maps. May be up to date?
I used the above maps in Canada and the lake and island outline was great

Hello Tom, Thanks for the response, but it's the wrong lake. The lake I'm interested in is called Chambers Lake, in Hibernia Park. The coords for it are,
40 01 50.93N 75 51 21.09W. It's about 2 miles due north of the lake your showed. If it's a lot of work to set it up, don't get involved, it's not that important. thanks, Ron
