I am very careful on the ice and don't take chances. As far as don't go in ice fishing, never fish alone. Always fish with a buddy or make sure there are people fishing the same ice you are on. I have since then bought a flotation ice suit and I never fish alone.

I too have a float suit. The only time I’ll go by myself is when the ice is 8” and still building in an area/ spot I’ve been fishing daily. I still spud my way out and watch for old holes from other icers that may have partially froze over. If no one else is on the ice I’m very hesitant to go on it. Most times I’ll wait til someone else shows up and we’ll walk out together. I don’t fish areas where nobody else has been on. And I have all my safety equipment with me in case someone or myself goes in. I’m always aware that no ice is totally safe. I’ve been icefishing for around 25 years now.
