I know when the gills are caught most of the time they are going to be eaten but when you catch a really small one that you want to throw back it seems that they inhale the bait and hook altogether what size hook do you guys use when fishing for ears and gills?

I can't get my photos from my phone because it's set up with limited capabilities, but yesterday I caught two shellcrackers, one was 10" and another 11" on a 3" Pop-R fishing a 6 acre pond. I have a much smaller Pop-R, or a Pop-R imitiation, I will try it today and post back on the results. Matter of fact, I don't know what type of sunfish this is, it's marked like a shellcracker with the red ears, but it has a much bigger mouth, and it isn't a green sunfish. Could this be one of those Georgia Giant Hybrids? It's definitely not a bluegill, but I caught those up to 9" yesterday.
The one in my siggy is my favorite.
laser blades with a wax worm. Seems to nail them before it sinks a foot.
Thank you for your kind words. It is a part of my new Danger! Danger! line up of lures. You can troll it, cast it, or use it as a dropper. It has tremendous versatility.
