    That looks like a redear sunfish or what we call a shellcracker where I'm from. They typically get much larger than a bluegill. The record I believe is around 5 lbs. That's a nice one you got there! Congrats!

    Those are them Iowa farm raised corn grown gills... very very big. Used to fish one of my dads co-workers farm ponds up in the Quad City area there... gills in his pond where longer then paper plates were wide.
    Some of the biggest and best tasting fillets you ever ate. Miss Iowa fishing sometimes.

    Midwest crappie has a pond fishing show that russ taped in indiana with Charlie Hilbreth about these georgia hybrids (indicated by the orange-edged fins).

    I don't think Russ and Charlie caught anything that big though.

    That's the biggest gill I've ever seen!!

    Makes me wanna go dig a pond...lol
