    Nice fish Chap!
    The ones we catch in this part of VA don't have as much of a red border on the gill flap, and have a "splotchier" looking coloration on the body. Even then, you can notice different colors from one body of water to the next. They will interbreed with other Lepomis species, making exact ID confusing at times.
    Here's one from Fri. caught in a nearby river.

    dang that is a wild looking fish.. nice catch man.. and the redear at the start of this post is amazing as well.. I need to slam a few large gills this summer yet..

    Very nice fish. Here is a pic of one I caught a couple weeks ago. Caught a larger one, 11 1/4", yesterday but the pic didn't turn out. I love catching big gills and redears.

    Full moon's coming up, catch um while ya can. I'm going to take the boat out tomorrow and fish as much as I can between then and the last of the month.
