The ones we catch in this part of VA don't have as much of a red border on the gill flap, and have a "splotchier" looking coloration on the body. Even then, you can notice different colors from one body of water to the next. They will interbreed with other Lepomis species, making exact ID confusing at times.

Nice fish. I just found this site so I,m a little late. That yellow and black pattern fly works well here in Kansas, too. They're hard to find though.
