    Question Accurate scale

I am on the hunt for an accurate hand held scale for weighing single bluegill.
I have got a few (doggone few) that I THOUGHT might be one pounders ,but would be neat to know for sure.
Here in the West Central IL area one pound bluegill are a very rare catch.
If not hand held, I would like to store it in the pocket on my float tube. Mike

    Default Big Gills

I have fished Houston County Lake here in Texas many times and while fishing for crappie ran across some Gill beds. Fishing off of one "NO WAKE" post I caught 40 in less than 90 minutes and of those 40, I had 17 that went over a pound. Biggest was 1 lb 12 oz. Talk about fun, they put up a fight! I used little slivers of raw shrimp on a #4 hook, no weight, small bobber. I used a triple beam scale............not exactly what you might carry around in your boat, but I had to know what those little monsters weighed!

I never got one verified, but I think the digital scales they have out now are pretty accurate. Rapala makes one and I think Cabela's also has one with their name on it that is less cost. I really don't know the accuracy of each and I think mine is the Rapala one. Some of them get kind of high cost, like $80, but the Rapala is like $29.

They do a good job IMHO!

You and me both! I think the smallest Boga grip is for fish up to 15 pounds. I'm not sure if it would be sensitive enough, though. Plus, they are a little pricey.

I'll keep looking, for sure. Let us know if you find anything.

    Default Pelouze

Although not a true fishing scale, I have weighed alot of bluegill, shellcracker with my pelouze. It is battery powered and very accurate. If more people would weigh their catches, there would be fewer and fewer 1lb catch stories...lol

Look at the two pics, that is a big shellcracker, didn't even weigh a pound.

You are exactly right. I take every "we caught 100 1lb plus gills" story with a big grain of salt.

Thumbs up I found the answer!

Thank you Jr. Branham and all others that responded.
Pelouze PE5 digital scale---- Looks like it will fit nicely in a gal. plastic freezer bag and store out of the way in the pocket of my float tube.
This is a pricy unit on the retail market but I have other options in mind:rolleyes:
This new quest is at the top of my "boy toy" list.:D
Deathb4disco- How right you are!!! Miss judged weight, hybrid Green sunfish-bluegill crosses, and shellcrackers have put a bunch of 1 pound bluegill stories out there. lol
Any that I have guessed at a pound certianly earned the right from the fight they put up. :D

    Believe me, I do!

Regarding sizes, my biggest gill was 11" and my biggest shellcracker was 12". I'm not sure if either one of them hit the pound mark, though.
