where/when to use a "split shot rig" for sunfish?
Does anyone use a split shot rig? If so, where and when?
I hear a lot about drop shot, so I didn't know if this rig was superior all the time, or if there were circumstances where the spit shot rig was a better choice.
I'm guess it would have to do with if the bluegills were on the bottom or suspended a bit. Also weeds (split shot might be better with fewer weeds, on flats)?

Basically anywhere you would use a Carolina rig . To me that means clean deep bottom .Dragging bait back to the weed line . Finding red ear in deep water is common in North MS . jmo

we only use split shot above a tiny jig to help the pencil float to stand up , lots of times our "family" rods have 8 or 10 lb test on them and with a tiny jig on heavy mono ,the float wont stand up correctly . beyond that we do not use split shot or drop shot set ups about 99 % of the time .

my drop shot rig for gills when shallow includes a split shot. I have a number 3 split at the bottom with a hook about 10-12 inches above it. I haven't been able to find a small enough drop shot weight to use when fishing shallow. the heavier weights make too much noise when hitting the water and stir up too much of the bottom when dragging them. I do use a real drop shot weight when fishing on bottom in deeper water 8 ft or more.
