Bad pickerel! Bad pickerel!
At least that was the problem - at a local lake before a wire leader were used. I hate getting bit off before I can even see and photograph what stole my lure. Sharp teeth go through mono like it isn't even there and braid not as fast but still cut. So, I got some stainless steel thin wire, made a loop at one end and added a clip at the other so I can change lures faster than tying.
I thought the wire may have a negative affect on lure action or fish biting. WRONG! Even the smallest lures caught the smallest and largest fish using a 1/32 oz jig with 2" soft plastic. It even seemed the leader + clip added to the attraction of small, slowly-worked finesse lures. I even had a fish attack in shallow water (5') vertical jigging!
First time out: yellow & whiter perch, sunfish, crappie, small bass and believe it not - a channel catfish!
Note the duolock snap:
Granted, the leader is not needed unless pickerel are a problem, but at least I know that a clip can be used to change jigs weighing as little as 1/32 oz and other lure types. Lures that were snagged on underwater stumps, rocks and pad stems were rarely lost rescued by pushing down on the jig. Usually the break occurs near the line tie. At times the snagged jig hook straightened out and I bent it back with pilers.
Food for thought...
