Thread: Help me purchase a fly rod/reel?

Bass Pro and Cabela's have lots of combos available in that price range. Also, check out Temple Fork Outfitter's (TFO) NXT starter outfits. TFO makes good stuff, and they're sold by both BPS and Cabela's.

An 8.5' or 9' 5 or 6wt is a good option. If you wanted one rod to do it all, I'd go with the 6, but that's a little heavy for panfish and a little light for smallies. I'd go with the 5wt for now and practice on panfish. If you like it, get a 7wt for smallies. A 5 and a 7 is a good combination.

I will also recommend the casting lessons. If you buy your outfit at a local shop, you should be able to get a brief lesson for free. Videos are helpful, but nothing beats a good instructor.
