That sounds like a good choice. It's hard to go wrong on gill tackle, though. Almost any light or UL rod will be fine.
I'd stick with 4# line. That's plenty strong, and you'll get more strikes.

What do you guys think? I have a 7 footer sitting around, maybe pair it with a small spinning reel and 4-6 pound test? Or would it not make a goodgill/shellcracker combo?

It sounds like the perfect setup for bluegill or shellcrackers. Your gonna have alot of fun!
My #1 jig casting Crappie rod is a Sam Heaton Signature Series 7ft'r, paired with a Mitchell Spidercast spinning reel/4lb test Mr Crappie Super-vis mono. The Signature Series and the Super Sensitive are nearly the same rod, having changed the name back just a few years ago .... and best I can tell, the rod blank color is the only difference (maybe they got a different mfg source ??)Originally Posted by nralover
Pair yours up with a nice 500 or 1000 series UL reel ... and you've got yourself a dandy panfish outfit ... regardless of method used. I've been using mine for around 5yrs ... and it's performed admirably.
