Gill Fishing with the Long Pole

This is me using my 48' pole for bluegillin'. It originally aired on the Kentucky Afield program last July. They've been rerunning it lately, and I just found it on youtube!

The TV camera definitely adds pounds. I'm not that fat in real life!

Is that a new pole where you have to hire a tractor & trailer to haul it to the water hole & back? Looks like it would wear me out tryn to put together & take apart all day tryn to get a fish on bank.And lord behold on a boat.Other boaters would have to goto next county/state to pass by it. Man I've never seen such a "LONG" fishn pole.

The elastic inside the pole acts as a reel, so you can land big fish. I've landed cats to 12# on the pole. Click on the thread below and scroll down to the first pic. That's me holding a 12 lb 13 oz carp taken on the pole. Got him on 6# line and a #10 hook.

I've landed other carp in the high teens. A twenty pounder is about the limit for my pole. An aquaintance of mine recently got a 30+ pound carp on a similar (but stronger) pole.

Actually, the pole is pretty light -- only about 2 pounds at its full length. And I would never use it in a boat, although you could use the top 2 or 3 sections in a boat very easily.

Bait presentation. If the fish are within reach of the pole, you can't beat the presentation. If fish are beyond reach of the pole, you have to use a rod and reel.

However, fighting a big fish on the pole IS pretty awesome -- like a tug of war!

Kevin that was real interesting. About a month ago I bought a In-Fishermen DVD 2 pack at Academy for 10.00. One of the DVD's was about Panfishing. On it it had Mick Thill showing British Match Fishing Techniques like you were doing. Where do you buy poles and tackle for this type fishing. And maggots do you raise them yourself. This has really sparked some interest in me. On the DVD he was using the streamlined floats, Carbon pole, small hooks with maggots and light 1lb test line. Thanks for posting this on match fishing. Fantastic!

Mick Thill taught me everything I know!

Wacker Baits (www.wackerbaits.com) is a good source. They carry mostly carp gear, but they also have a match/float fishing section. I've also heard good things about NISID www.nisid.com. Mick is also a good source (www.mickthill.com) I believe he's out of the country right now, though. Both Bass Pro and Cabelas carry the Thill floats.

Poles are hard to come by. Mick brought me mine from England. There are a few English tackle shops who will ship to the US. Wacker sells a cheap pole -- probably OK to learn with it.

Grubco (see link above) and Vados Bait both carry maggots (a/k/a spikes.)
