Do fish ever strike lures to eat them? Could be, but not plausible in my book in that I believe fish are biologically programmed to attack various shapes & actions combinations: a concept all those lure companies have made billions based on that simple fact. What's been advertised via the media is that those lures are representations that fish want to (magically) consume. Yet fishing lures are the most unnatural objects they will ever experience in their lifetime yet they attack them over and over.
Considering all the lures you've caught fish on, how many moved and looked like the real thing it was supposed to represent?I'll bet not many!
Is the reason they attacked a lure based on curiosity? I'm sure not curious when an insect lands on the back of my neck - Swat! Fish maybe can be seen to swat lures as the irritating things they are that just don't belong.
