Let’s rewind the clock to June 25th this year and visit a beautiful lake in SW Virginia for a little Panfish action with a fellow CDCOM member.

A beautiful high elevation electric only lake at 3500ft filled with standing timber and aquatic vegetation, we launched early and quickly scored some Gills.

Bruisers cruise these waters, and 8” was the boat benchmark for our collection efforts.

Tannins from the lakeside rhododendron and laurel help give the lakes inhabitants an awesome coloration, but Gills need little help in the pretty department.

A few Crappie and a Cracker or two made the trip back to TN, just a good mess of fish and an awesome day with a great fisherman and host.

Fast forward to today, October 9th and the wife and I decided to do some Fall leaf peeping, but where to go? The Great Smoky Mountains are in our back yard but so are literally millions of tourists coming to view them. Let’s head the opposite way to SW Virginia, I know of a 3.7 mile trail that winds around a beautiful lake.

Best of all, it’s Fall. Cool weather greeted us this morning, 64 degrees but with a little humidity.

The old Crappie dot Com hat was only seen by a few squirrels, some birds and the colorful but fleeting leaves of the season.
