I use and 8' 4wt. I can catch the average 1-2# bass as well as all the gills and specks I want. A 4wt will cast everything but a big popper or hair bug. If you really want to have some fun, get a 1 or 2 wt and become surprised at what you can catch on those...

www.byrdultrafly.com for some info on the 1-2 wt fly fishing rods.

Tie a bead head nymph of some sort or a sinking black ant a couple of feet off the back of your popper and see how much your catch rate improves. I typically probably in the area of 3:1 off the dropper. The last time I fished it I didn't have a single topwater strike but they were tearing up the dropper.

As far as the outfit. A 5 or 6 would be good for bass and bream. You may have problems with really big bass bugs but other than that you should be good. Temple Fork Outfitters offer a good quality rod for less than $100. I've used one of the $40 Okumas and can't complain. Ross Worldwide is also now offering a reel in that price range but it has the drag of the normal Ross reels so it'd probably be a better choice.

    I don't know where you're located but http://www.southeastflyfishingforum.com/forum/
is a good flyfishing site and you could look for input from those folks. The board sponsor is a nice guy and has good prices in his store.

Ok, the Ross Flystart which you are speaking of, has a terrible drag. I had one freespool on me right off the fly shop's shelf when I had it tightened down to feel the drag resistance. The Orvis Clearwater is not a bad reel in that price range, has a decent drag, as well as a lifetime warranty, all for $39.00.
