Thread: fly fishing question

This was an almost brand new sneaky pete when I set out this morning. I did not take my camera, because it was drizzly off an on. Bream were attacking, one really nice bass, and 3 ring perch. Then I noticed I was missing hits, helps to have a hook!
Starting to wonder why I have other rods!
I was useing this with about 4 ft of 4lb leader & sinking line.

The Hobbs Creek is a significant step up in quality without paying a lot more. In addition to my own experience, I've heard a lot of good comments on the HC combos. I've only heard one comment on the Dogwood Canyon, and it was negative.

Incidentally, if you buy the outfit at a BP store, check out the internet price beforehand. I just came back from the Atlanta BPS, and the HC combos were $110-120. But online, they're $90-100. The store will give you the internet price if you tell them. Sorry, but I didn't check the Dogwood Canyon prices.

i am getting t he hoobs creek 9foot pole 6 weight. I want to try some bigger poppers for the larger bream. hope to also get one of those electic filleting knifes so i can get some practice in.

I use a good 9' rod,, about 6 wt.It works perfect, especially with floating poppers or black ants. Good luck bro!

There are as many questions on fly fishing than the meaning of life. It's lucky is not so hard. I would try a good fly shop first. Remember a few things,you don't need a $1000 rod and reel to enjoy the sport,most likely would not even know the the difference between a $100 rod and $800 rod. The reel is there to hold the line in 99% of the cases,unless you are planning to land a 50# fish on 3# tippet put the most of your money in the rod and line. Also don't think you need a fast tip which is all the rage,a slower tip action is much more forgiving if your just getting started.I have rods from Orvis,Fenwick,LL Bean.St.Croix,Sage,Cabelas,etc. all have good points and bad.One last thing almost all high end rods are the same blank just more goodies than the lower priced blanks. Enjoy

Go to Ebay and find a Sage DS2 4,5, or 6 weight. Get the Okuma with WF 6 line and you will be good to go. I love these DS 2 rods and you can probably pick one up for about $125. Great Rods with plenty of back bone and the 6 W will throw some large size stuff. I over line mine with 7 W line and it helps some.

I think you made a very good choice for a middle of the road outfit. It might be a good idea to get a spare spool for your reel. One could be loaded with a cheaper level line to use when bream fishing and the other loaded with a nice weight forward or bug taper line to use when throwing the heavier bass flies. Later you can add to your arsenal with a nice little 4 wt. for straight bream fishing and then maybe an 8 wt. for throwing the big 1/0 poppers at lunker bass. Your fly fishing journey has just begun.
