Thread: Diawa Revros 1000

Some wouldn't regularly and purposely use a 1000 size reel to target such fish. Quite a few UL fishermen use 2500 series reels. That said, I've caught plenty of bass up to 8 pounds with 500 and 1000 sized (and inexpensive models) reels. I fish almost exclusively with ultralight gear these days. The rod does most of the heavy lifting in most situations anyway.

It's the 10# trout 4#+ bass (small & large mouth) and catfish ranging up to 30+ inches.

One idea the author preaches is the concept of "good enough". We're all in search of that one, perfect rod, reel, TV, boat, etc. The reality is that almost any choice you make will be "good enough".

The last month while fishing for crappie at night with bobbers rig. I caught 4 catfish in which 2 of them over 7lb on cheap rod and 10 years old Sahara 750 FB. My current bass setup is Daiwa Tatula 1000 and caught plenty of 2-4 bass with it. Advantages of bigger size reel are casting distance, bigger gear and more drag capacity but for bass I don’t really see the need. Smaller reel the big advantages is weight, I normally use spinning for finesse type fishing and weight of reel is really crucial to balance the rod.

People keep focusing on 1/2 of my responce, namely the strength/advantage of a bigger spool on a reel. 3 replies one of witch I answered on catching big fish with a ul reel. Yet no one has brought up the advantages of longer casting which is far more important IMHO.

It was diawa's words not mine with the advantages of the legalis asb spool. I merely point out why I bought a reel with the small ul body and a larger spool.

I don't go out and target larger fish with the ul setup with the diawa regal reel. But right now when I'm fishing for bluegill or crappie in a local river which is a main tributary to lake erie there's a lot of small mouth bass running right now. There's also a lot of bass in the ponds and inland lakes I fish trying for bluegill and crappie. 3 days ago I went to 1 of them and was targeting bluegill and a large mouth bass decided to get in on the action. Plus you can never tell with the catfish when and where they'll be hitting especially in the early part of the season. Couple weeks back I was fishing an inland lake for crappie and ended up with a 19" catfish.



On the other hand I will be putting that diawa regal on my 8' dough rod (ul) this winter targeting steelhead trout. The small steelhead are +/- 4# with the larger steelhead running 9#+ like the 28"+ 9 1/2# steelhead I caught in march.



The larger spool for casting is what attracted me to the regal over the revros the op asked about along with the legalis with the small ul frames.

I simply saw it as the regal 2000d has the small ul frame with a larger spool for longer casts, better pressure and 10bb's as an added bonus over the revros & legalis reels from the same mfg/same parts/same price range +/- $10.

Glad to see everyone catching big fish on the ul setups, I'm sure everyone has. How was quality & distance of the 300/400 casts it took to catch 1 those large fish???

I guess it really depends on what you want to use the reel for. I wanted a new ul setup for 1/64, 1/32, 1/16 oz jigs small plastics and 1" lures and spoons.

just another opinion along with the thought process I used when buying a diawa ul reel.

For my application it's all about casting distance. Its more important than throwing very light jigs. I mostly float fish in ponds and streams with my UL gear. I also prefer to fish braid and some reels are prone to wind knots.
