If you want to get it perfect, reel the main line on first, then use a uni-to-uni to join the backing, then reel the backing on. But you say, "Hey, DB4D, that leaves the backing on top and buries the premium line at the bottom." You're correct. So you need a spare spool. Take off the spool you've just filled with line and pop on the spare. Tie the backing from the full spool to the empty spool and wind it on. Your backing will then be on the bottom of the spool, the premium line will be on top, and it will be perfect.

If you don't have a spare spool, or you don't want to go to the trouble of the method above, just wind the backing on and leave space for the premium line.
