Digging up this old thread. Anyone try one of these yet? I have the 7ft sitting on my rod rack. Can't wait to get out this year.
I think maybe one of our members up North reported on using one. I look forward to your review. I have the previous Panfish Model, 7ft one piece. Nice all around rod for the money, caught a lot of fish on it.
I had a local store loan me one to try in a pond. They kept going on about how there was nothing else out there in the world like it. Well....I took my shotgun case with about a half dozen JDM rods along for them to look at. After that they said “We didn’t realize there were rods like these”. Here is my take on the 64 model I used for a few bluegill. It beats out any other UL rod sold in the states hands down. It is not easy to compare it to JDM rods...meaning there is nothing straight up to compare with. It is softer than Ajing or Mebaru rods. It is close to an area trout rod but not exactly. The area trout rods I have....save for the Palms.....are faster rods. One can argue about 2 piece rods vs 1 piece rods all day long...but the fact is a 1 piece is not an advantage in a UL rod. To me 1 piece UL rods are an accident waiting to happen. I know that because I’ve broken several over the years...all in transport. Here are my thoughts in the end. For me to purchase that rod in the state of TN it will cost me a little more than $400. For that kind of money there are so many JDM rods available that it is just not an advantage to me. But I can assure you....had I never known about JDM UL rods I would have bought the St Croix.

thanks for the detailed reply! I hope to get out and fish with the new rods I picked up this winter. tict, graphiteleader, and the new Croix. I will say the Croix is probably the only one of the bunch that I would boat flip a fish with. I also have the 7 foot normal panfish series and fished the heck out of it for a couple years, I like it. the new Croix seems a little more ridged, and not quite as floppy.
How do the G Loomis rods compare to a JDM of similar price. I have a SR841 that I totally love. I can feel light bites in the wind. I need another 7’ for casting and trying to decide whether to buy another Loomis St Croix or JDM
I don't try to push JDM gear on anyone. I have many videos telling folks "Don't start down this road". I tell folks in the end all you need is a cane pole and some crickets. But here is the deal....dollar for dollar you will get a far better product out of Japan...hands down. You will need to adjust your thinking...JDM UL rods are much different than US market rods. The Japanese stay on the cutting edge of graphite rods. Have you seen any of my videos? Fishing with high end JDM rods really gives one an advantage. Right now I am eyeing some new rods that are at the $500 mark. Was on the fence about them until the virus hit. But life is short and I want to in the end experience all I can. I have helped a whole lot of folks navigate the waters of buying a JDM rod. I have never had a single person come back and tell me that it was not as good as they hoped it would be...as a matter of fact it starts folks down the road to buying several more JDM rods. Thats is why I warn folks.....as I was warned...when you buy one it won't be your last.

Any comparisons to some of the high-end Abu-Garcia stuff (Real Finesse series)?
I think we have a member who has this rod.....my memory is a bit off these days. I have researched it.....if I remember correctly it has a 55 ton blank. Read good things about it. I wanted one.....still do....but I can’t buy them all....LOL.

I know that a member named Yodie has one. On about page 48 or so in the JDM Rod thread he does a very nice review of the rod. If I don't have the exact page it is right close by.

Well I’d be interested in knowing where the JDM rods are manufactured. I lived 4 years in Korea and at the time one of the largest rod manufacturing was a company there. I became good friends with the owner and toured his fracture many times. I still have 2 fly rods that was built for JDM that they produced. Was very interesting watching them wrap the graphite blanks
Keep in mind that although a JDM rod may be made outside of Japan it has to be built for the Japanese market. I have some high end rods that are made in China.....even though it is not listed anywhere on the rod. I have a scarce Megabass Shore Luck Limited that is such a beautiful rod I can't bring myself to fish with it...it is made in China. Many companies send made in Japan components over to other countries to have the rod built there and then send the completed product back. I have no issues at all in buying a high end JDM rod built in China...but I have to tell you when you look at the Graphiteleader....Ever Green.....Tenryu...Yamaga Blanks...and other "Made in Japan" rods you will find the build to be impeccable. I have a $600 rod coming....somehow I found it from an ebay seller for $286...feel like the luckiest man in the world....but I know the rod is not built in Japan....but I fully expect it to be impeccable quality.

Just thought I would make a comment about the St. Croix Panfish Elite rod. I purchased one about a month ago and have
been fishing bluegill with it exclusively since purchase. The rod is incredible. Light weight, fast tip, and super sensitive.
I see no weakness anywhere on it. I've been using a Major Craft Finetail Area FAX-602UL for the past year and I
feel the SC Panfish Elite is, as Randy says, "off the charts" by comparison. Downside is $350. But this is offset for me with it's
No Question 15 year warranty. And I called St. Croix 3 times over a 2 week period to make SURE what would happen
if I broke the tip off this rod sometime in the next 15 years. Bottom line -- they will send me a new rod. All they need
is for the rod's serial to be registered on their website and send some pics of the broken rod.
I've nicknamed this rod Excalibur. And it's worthy of that name. I got the 5.5 ft UL and paired it with a Daiwa Tatula 1000
loaded with 4 lb Nanofil tied to a 4 lb FC Sniper leader.
Congrats! Now don’t get me wrong....nothing wrong with a Tatula. But a rod of that caliber....and one you have given a name to....deserves a Presso Limited or even an Exist....LOL. I have my first sub 6 foot rod coming this week. Very anxious to try it out.

I have the 6' LE Panfish love the rod only thing wrong with it is it's a 1 piece rod...I have it paired with a Cardiff Ci4+1000S...
Do these upper end St Croix (Legend) rods ever go on sale?

I’ve never seen any on sale. HOOK 1 just closed all their stores. Lots of gear on sale there...but not that rod.

I'm going to keep my eye out. Just might have to pull the trigger on one.

Buy the blank and learn how to build a rod. Not that difficult and very rewarding hobby.

I could build it for under probably
less than 200 dollars. I've built a number of St Croix SC 5'S. I dont build anymore. The advantages of a custom made rod are handles that fit your particular hand and accurate guide placement based on proven blank loading techniques. Go to www.rodbuilding.com and they have lots of information on there. This is a handle on a SC V St Croix from 10 years ago. I believe it's the best handle you can put on a spinning rod. Lightest and most sensitive. Sorry for the rambling. Attachment 380846

Using the exact components, on the rod mentioned, I am not even sure you can buy the individual components for less than 250 dollars...then you have to account for your time as a rod builder. The Torzite guide set alone is around 100 bucks...with the Arowana tip top alone at the 19 dollar mark. I am not sure one can even buy the blank for that rod but if you can I would guess it would sell for 150-200 bucks.
Regards
Your very first sentence is the issue. I would not use that handle, the torzite guides or the aronowa tip top. My handle would be a all cork split grip turned on a rod lathe to fit my large hands. The transition and running guides would be micro's and 3 transition guides would be fuji high frames. The micro running guides weigh less than the epoxy used to coat them. Their cost is about 3 bucks each. The tip top would be a fugi SIC 5mm. It costs about 6 bucks. I've purchases the SC V's blanks about 7 years ago for about 120 bucks. My supplier gave me a pretty good discount. I don't count my time because it's a hobby. I have taken many factory rods and stripped them to bare blank and rebuilt them. They are always better performing after rebuilding with components far different than the originals. As for availability I don't know. In the past St Croix has sold the blanks for every factory rod they sold.
I do have a question thou. Just how far do you feel you need to through a 1/32 jig to efficiently catch fish? I would estimate that most of the time I am within 40 feet of my target.

I think that, for various reasons, some anglers will want Torzite guides in titanium frames and other bells and whistles. Those may not have much of an effect on the catch rate, but they may change the fishing impressions, especially when the rest of the tackle is chosen along the same (snobby, maybe?) lines. For myself, I found that to be true, but many others that I know do not share this sentiment. As it has been said many times before, to each their own. I do find the process of rod building fascinating and envy your hobby.
It is extremely rewarding to catch your fish on a rod and a lure that one builds with his own hands. Developing the skills to do this are a worth while endeavor. I worked in the mechnical engineering field for 32 years. We used to say there is always a way to build a better mousetrap! Thanks for your comments.

Wow what a thread. I had no idea that rods could get that intricate.
Is there a rod in the 125$ range where one could tell a difference in feel and quality?
Say a 6'6" UL to throw a 1/24-1/32 jig for countdown fishing or finesse.
Asking for a friend because I used to believe an Ugly Stick was good enough. Lol

If you want to try JDM you can get a MajorCraft Triple Cross for right around $150... sometimes Digitaka will run them on sale at 20% off... food for thought... they have a 6’8” model... for what you are using the rod for I would suggest the solid tip... if using for dock shooting I would get the tubular model... I have a 6’8” tubular that I use for float fishing but if tossing jigs would like the sensitivity of the solid tip...
I like the fun factor of UL rods it seems when moving up to 7 foot they are not a true UL rod any more the action changes with much more backbone, it`s plain fun to feel the entire rod bend right into the handle but never get this feel with anything longer. My StCroix Avids are this way just lose something going longer would there be JDM rod 7 foot or longer with this type of feel?
You might could get that rod action going to a 7 foot stream trout rod. But...stream trout rods are not made for sensitivity. A 7 foot mebaru rod might give you that depending on the rod...brand....you get the sensitivity with a mebaru rod. I suggest you take a look at the sticky https://www.crappie.com/crappie/panf...ating-panfish/ There is a ton of info there and a lot of reviews on JDM UL rods. Area trout rods have the action you are looking for along with superb sensitivity. But the longest area rod I have seen is one I own....the 6' 7" Banshee. Area trout rods do not come any longer. I too am all about fun. I don't know if you have seen any of my videos but I have more fun than allowed by law with these rods....LOL. Just got in a 5' 9" XUL Banshee......can't wait to get it on the water.
