I'm not an expert, but my input would be to make sure that once you've located the bedding area, back off far enough away that you can't see the fish and then let the area rest a few minutes before casting to them. I've sometimes had difficulty catching decent size fish when they can see me. Usually bedding males will bite well in my experience with the only exceptions being when I've been too close to them. Any bait or flashy lure seems to work for me on the beds with crickets, wax worms, and 1/32 or 1/64 oz jigs and spin beetles being my favorites.
