Etex ... have you considered using weedless jigheads ?? They would allow you to probe down in/around that deeper cover, with "less" possibility of hanging up.

I get 1/16 & 1/32oz weedless jigheads custom made by a Crappie.com member (Grousefly) ... with #4 & #2 Aberdeen hooks, but he may be able to make you some with smaller hooks (or even smaller heads ??)

I said "less" possibility of hanging up, because one can "hang up" a weedless jig ... it's just "less likely" than when using a open hook jig.
