I don't know for sure. I have used lots of unpainted raw lead ones and caught a lot of fish. I recently bought some pretty little 1/16 oz powder coated lead heads off eBay and they're just too dog gone pretty to use. I find myself putting on the raw ones when I break one off instead of the painted ones. Call me kookie, I guess. GTT
