On warm days in January (like today), I've caught them on the bank in 2' of water.

Most of the time, though, they will in deeper water well off the bank. Go to where you caught them during the spawn but move out into deeper water. They will often suspend.

This time of year on ponds I fish 1" curlytails on a 1/64 jighead 18"-24" under a weighted float . I fan cast from the bank . I cast , count to ten , start retrieving as slow and steady as you can stand it . Sometimes I'll pause and let the jig fall. , then start retrieving .
Like DB4D says when it's sunny , they can be found near the bank . This time of year , if it's not sunny either, I'll not be there either . .
Sometimes I'll carry a folding stool and sit and fan cast an area .
I'll also use 1/80th and 1/100th micro jigs tied with rabbit fur and chenille .
Yesterday I caught seven from an overfished local public pond , today I caught eight gills , a small LM , and a hand size crappie from a local water reservoir . First trip out with the jonboat this year . I fish from the banks of ponds more than I use the boat . I save the boat for trips with my brother .
I fish for anything , any size . Sometimes I'll pick up a good one .

I only target them for catfish bait in the winter, but I catch them on a tiny Carolina rig, #8 cricket hook, and string a wiggler on the hook. Catch bream, white perch, and catfish from 4" to half a pound. Just throwing it out in 8-10 FOW on my lake. Some spots will hold a ton of fish, others hold nothing. This if from a pier so I don't have depth finder to tell me why. I'd imagine it's bottom contour or structure.

I fish a lot of similar spots. I would concentrate on 5-10' depths.
