Bread is a great bait, too. You really don't need to ever visit a bait shop to catch fish. Any grocery store has bread, hot dogs and corn, all of which are awesome baits.
I use bread almost exclusively now. Most of the smaller lakes around my area are full of ducks and feed them bread. The Bluegill, Carp and sometimes cats come up and eat them too. Instead of buying $3 can of worms, I just get a 97 cent bag of bread.
I also feed the fish in my pond bread. I usually take a whole loaf down there and feed them. It takes them about 3 minutes for them to start eating it, but after they start, they don't stop
