    Hi Andy,

I have been told that the classic McGinty wet fly is not stocked in fly shops anymore (stupid move by fly shops) and hard to find by other fly anglers. The one that I use is the Improved McGinty and that just means that there is no duck quill sections wing so it is basically now a soft hackle and easier to tie. The fish don't seem to care one way or the other. The original with the wing does swim better. I tie my own flies. I have not bought a fly since I was just out of high school and that was many years ago.

The Improved McGinty is a pretty easy pattern to tie. A size 10 wet fly hook or any size 10 short shank baitholder hook should do. Red hackle fibers for the tail (hook shank length), yellow/black/yellow chenille for the body, and about two turns of a yellow or ginger hen hackle laid back wet fly style for the collar. Finish with a black thread head.

The Improved Black Gnat is tied exactly the same as above except that all the material parts of the fly are black in color.

    Best of luck.
