    Default Nice afternoon for panfish

I went to the local horsepower restricted lake for an afternoon getaway. Popeyes and wax worms worked just fine. Most of the fish came from 12 feet deep, in 20 fow. Water temps still 83. Some of the females were still packin eggs.

1/2 oz egg sinkers, then a 18 inch leader. I use popeye jigs, and tip them with wax worms. Chartreuse, and black jigs. I keep several colors rigged up, and change them when the fishing slows down. When the temps rise in the summer months, I can still catch a cooler full of gills. I do catch the occasional red ear and crappie. The lake I fish on a regular basis doesn't have many crappie, but when I do hit lakes with numbers of crappie, I pick up quite a few.

I like fishing for gills when the water heats up, and the fish go deep. You can catch them when they are in 5-6 fow, but usually the fish are concentrated, and will run laterally when they hit the bait, and tangle your lines. In deeper water, they tend to disperse, and suspend, and dive when they hit the bait. It is a lot of fun, and easy to learn. Most folks that see me spider rigging assume I am crappie fishing. They are surprised to find I am on the hunt for bluegill. They also give me an odd look when they see me in the middle of the lake in 40 fow catching bluegill.

For most people, bluegill fishing means bed fishing. They ignore them the rest of the year, even though they'll hit year round.
