One more vote for the flyrod ... a 4 weight around 8-9 feet. A modest collection of sponge spiders, poppers, ants and dry flies - you will soon be the envy of all rod and reel types.

I'm gonna go with a Ultra Light spinning reel and rod.

Buy the best reels you can afford. Pflueger, Shimano, Daiwa...whatever you can afford.

I like a 6' or 6'6" graphite rod. The shorter rods work well for trout streams, but the longer rod is great for hook sets on the lake or ponds.

Trilene XL 4# test is great for panfish.

Get some small spinners, Rapala F3 minnows, and a wad of 1/32 and 1/16 oz jigs with grub tails. Also buy some #4 and #6 red hooks, small split shot sinkers and a few small bobbers for live bait fishing.

Dont forget a stringer and a knife! :D

I have found that a regular size light weight spinning reel works best for me. The smaller ultralight reels seem to tangle line although I have only used the cheaper varieties. The smaller reels do not cast as far either. I agree with Buckmark that a 6 or 6'6 graphite pole is a good length.
