Thread: Ice jigs for bluegills

I think just about any jig tipped with bait is a good bluegill bait. Last year, I just used a plain jig most of the time.

Sure would like to see a picture of these "ice jigs" ya'll using.

Well, here is just a few of what I use. Some from LA Baits. I have a bunch of them. Some with a barb to add plastics. The ball heads I use a wax worm on.Hope this helps.

I haven't tried it but I've wondered the same thing. The ice jigs I'm thinking of don't have a jig head. The shank of the jig is thicker than normal (that's where the weight comes from) and the shank is somewhat flat like a spoon and usually brightly colored.

I've thought of keeping a jig pole rigged with an "ice jig" and tipping it with a wax worm or crappie-bite for vertical jigging. Alot of the time it seems like the bluegill where I fish will hit a crappie jig but not get it in their mouth.

Your talking about a "tear drop" all different colors, usually with a dot on the painted side, and silver or gold on the other.

These are some of the ice jigs ( known up north as pin mins. ) that I make. Can tip with small pieces of live bait waxworm , maggots , pieces of worm , crappie nuggets or small pieces of plastic.. They were designed for ice fishing but work well in open water also. There are local panfish specialists and these are all they ever use.. Never liked being limited by what you can buy so I started making my own when I was a youngster.

Lots of " snowbirds " and people that are retiring to live out there retirement in the south are using these at their new locations. From everything that I read they continue to do well on them. So much so that the home grown southern fishermen are getting interested in this " ice fishing " lure.

For size reference thats a 1/80 th oz jig.
