Early Spring Pond Bream

In went to a local pond yesterday, its about 8 or 10 acres and its creek fed with relatively clear water. There are tons of bream and a few bass it it that I saw. I fished there once last year and caught a bream, but that was in the dead of summer. Question: what baits this time of year produce well for hand size bream, between 6 and 8 inches. Stick with the tried and true beetle spins, or are those better suited for summertime? Try some worms? Any advice greatly appreciated.

i know there are tons of good jigs for bream and i have tons, i was just wondering what artificials work best in cold water like this.

The colder the water, the more I rely on bait. For artificials, I'd pick a light jig (1/64 or 1/80 oz) or a trout nymph under a float. The "float 'n fly" works fine for gills.

I do very well with bettle spins this time of year. Live bait works, but I can cover more ground and seem to catch more with spinners.

I might have to try different presentations, but once I find what they like, it's on! I'll start with a slow retrieve, reeling a couple cranks then letting it fall. If that doesn't work, i'll try a veryfast retrieve, especially if the gills are following the bait but not taking it. By fast, I mean reeling in line so that the blade of the spinner is rippling the water surface. It doesn't break the surface, but is just beneath it. Many times this will trigger finicky gills this time of year. It doesn't make sense to me, but it works.

Intuition tells me slow retrieves are the way to go in cool water, but that is not always the case. I have fished a small section of a stream and not caught a single fish in 30 mins using a slow retrieve. By only changing the speed of retrieve, I would catch them on every other cast.

In summary, I'll choose spinners!

What color is your go to for March and April? Do you use hair, tube, or solid body jigs?
I went today for couple hours and caught 7 fish(6 bass and 1 crappie) all on a 1/16 char. road runner pro(gold willow blade) with a green/char. solid body turbo tail. Had a blast catchin 2 bass that topped out around 3lbs on UL combo but no gills.

Black/chart solidbody 90% of the time for me.

i went to a local gas station yesterday and picked up a pack of redworms. I'm going to the pond today after "work" so i will post a report later. I'm gonna try bits of redworms on a #8 light wire aberdeen with a split shot for the suspended fish hanging out under the bridge pillings. I'm sure I will throw a spinner or two also
