I do it in a few weeks and right after the ice is out. Although I do it from my kayak it is pretty much the same thing. 3 rods of 3 different lengths with 2 different lures and baits on each one set at different depths. Once I find a couple gills, every line gets switched to the one they were hitting. In fact I often immediately cut back to one rod with 2 baits about 14 inches apart with the bait they prefered at the depth they were hitting and then just sit over or drift over that spot. Can be pretty easy to pull a couple dozen good ones once you find them with the spider rig set up. The spider rig is basically just a searching tool for me but it works well for gills just as it does for crappies.
It is not about the equipment you have to use,
It is about how you use the equipment you have. :D
