The Coosa River is clearest in the summer with little rain and wind, it muddies up in late fall, winter, and spring with lots of rain and wind.

The fish that GCD posted looks more like a pumpkinseed to me.

The green sunfish around here look more like a warmouth.

Nope, it's a Greenie! You can't really see the larger mouth because of the camera angle.

The color changes Sunfish go through are pretty amazing, if you go by this chart it looks more like a Longear.

I've seen quite a few green sunfish, but none of them have that red coloring to them...

The fish in the picture is a "Longear Sunfish" not a "Green Sunfish".

I agree... green sunfish are much slimmer and have less of a "panfish" shape to them. Also the mouth is hinged like a largemouth bass. Also, the one GCD posted has the long earflap. However, those are my favorite to look at... I've caught them so full of aqua and orange that you'd swear they came off a coral reef somewhere...

I figured most of us here are knowledgeable enough on what we fish for to ID them...

Well, dnchance is actually the closest to correct! Look 'em up folks... the pics in dnchances post are correct except that the longear is also called a pumpkinseed. The shellcracker, chinquapin, or whatever ya refer to it as where you're from is actually a redear sunfish.

Green sunfish are referred to as "black perch" (NONE of these fish are perch fyi!) 'round here and are the #1 preferred trotline/limbline bait for catfish.

    Here's a link for the non-believers... take a look for yourself.Sunfish ID

And I need to add that here in Missouri you had better know what they are as creel limits vary by species in a lot of fisheries. Redear are usually limited to 15 - 25 per day/per person. Bluegill are usually limited too but the rest are usually limited to 50 per day if limited @ all.

Also, click on the photos in that link I posted above to see detailed info and nicknames on each species!

We use the longears as catfish bait (around here, they are referred to as pumpkinseed).

Pretty little fish. You can pull up to a riprap bank on KY Lake and catch as many of them as you want to mess with.

I used to catch a few from a pond back in the early 80's,don't see them very often. We got a few from a local lake recently. There is no size, usually 4-5".The ones I caught recently hit right near shore.
