I usually fish with a 12-15" leader and have the cork about 5 inches from hook. that puts the bait and hook about 3" of the bottom instead of in all the leaves and trash at the bottom of the lake.
Do you lose the feel of the bite? It seems like you would with all the terminal tackle between you and the hook. With the drop-shot you get the same off the bottom effect with a tight line. The feel you get with a drop-shot is very good and the fish usually wont swallow the hook before you know it.
