Nice mess of fish Tim

Went out Thursday for a couple hours to see if I could get any fish to bite pushing the long poles. The area I decided to fish has held some big ones in the past during the pre-spawn. It ended up being a pretty special day not because of numbers only caught 10 total but one special fish. I checked a brushpile in 15 fow and saw several crappie around it. When I turned the boat to get the poles over the pile I saw a single log with a few fish on it and stopped the boat over it. Ended up catching 5 fish over 2 plus pounds and a big black male. The biggest male I have ever caught prior to this one weighed 1 1/2 lbs. When this fish hit, he pulled the pole down 3 eyes deep and fought like a big sandbass staying down and slipping drag. When I got him up to say I was shocked would be an understatement. He ended up being a little over 16 inches and weighed 2 lbs 10 oz. I was pushing 3 inch shiners on a double rig with 3/4 ounce weight. Won't forget this day for awhile. Probably a once in a lifetime fish.
Oh my! pig, pig, pig! Awesome Timy.
Cowabunga!!!

It's been about ten years since I've been on here, but I figured I would add what little info I had. So long I had to create a new profile.
On Saturday, April 6th, caught 15 keepers in the 11-14" range on the north end of the lake using minnows over brushpiles. Fish were caught in 14-21 feet of water. Water temp was 56 degrees. Water temp was 60 in the back of the coves but for the life of me I have no clue how to catch shallow crappie. I just stick with brushpiles in 15-20 feet range. I just moved to KS from TN and that approach works well year round on KY Lake so that is what I go with. Happy fishing.
Nice report Nick51!

Gotta go back to your roots sometimes. A cork and a jig or a cork and an Arkansas jig (minner). We kept 31 yesterday.
Man those are pretty!

Tim. How far under the cork were you fishing?
2 1/2 to 6 ft but that's gonna change with this cold front. Wouldn't hurt if it was a short lived front that lasted a day or 2 but this one is gonna hang around through Sunday. Won't affect the deeper fish but it will affect the shallow bite plus the 1 to 2 inches of rain forecast for Saturday.
X2 on going back to your roots Tim. When you find that spot on a spot you remember quickly that the basics produce...
Wow that cold front hit us hard. Pulled the fish back to the staging areas. Had to hunt them today and finally found the bigger fish in 16 fow. Water temp went from 68 deg last week to 56 to 58 deg today. Numbers were down but all big females.
Crappie still haven't recovered from the strong cold front. Still catching the bigger fish 14 to17 ft. It's a waiting game. Males are sporadic at best Some days shallow and others deeper. Lake is falling and almost down to normal pool at 1010.00. Water temps are slowly recovering from 60 deg in some areas to 66 in others. Shallow bite will stay tough until they close the gates.
Thank you for the report TimY. I heard fishing was tough and there were a lot of boats on the water down there last Friday. I think we all should book with you...
Different day same old story. Already got over 3 inches of rain last night and this morning on the lake and upstream with a lot more on the way. They are predicting 5 to 6 inches up here before it's over. Here we go again. It was fun while it lasted.
We’re working on 4”” south of the dam.
Does this to us just about every year. The COE isn’t even releasing much water to try and keep ahead of the inflow.
What's the lake look like now Tim?
Lake is 6 1/2 ft high and rising. Still 30,000 cf of inflow. No gates open. If the COE doesn't open the gates soon we are in trouble. Lake came up over 2 ft last night.
I saw they have huge floods on the upper Mississippi River drainage, so with the need to get water down river quickly, I don’t see them opening the gates on any of the Arkansas River system soon, and when they do, Kaw will be the last to get drained.
Projected crest is around 1020.00 is what they are saying or 10 ft above normal pool. We are over 1017.00 now with 30,000 cf still coming in with only 5000 cf going out. Be careful north of Sarge. A lot of big debris. Coon ramp will close by tomorrow.
11 foot high today. Coon ramp is closed. Docks at sarge and washunga closed but ramps still open as of today. Inflow has dropped below 15,000 with 5,400 going out. All gates at Kaw and Kesystone still closed. Only releasing out of sluice gate at Kaw. Have to see how much rain we get this week.
Starting to get real serious around here. Lake is 31 1/2 f above normal and still rising fast with 125,000 cf of inflow. All campgrounds and ramps are closed.
That's not great news thanks for the update.
TimY, what is the highest you have seen the lake get?
It went over the road just east of the dam one year but they claim the pressure moved the dam 2 inches so I don't think they will let that happen again. They would do an emergency release. They do have all 8 gates open a foot right now to relieve the pressure but only releasing 20,000 cf. With 130,000 cf coming in, that's like dripping a faucet. Water is around 10 ft under sarge bridge today and rising fast. Flood control pool is at 91% capacity.
Wow ; not good... Thank you for keeping us up to date TimY.
There goes a bunch of crappie down to Josh. It will take a long time to get the lake down near normal. Just got my new live scope and here comes the floods. Just my luck, oh well it's bought and gettin mounted.
I’m not Tim, but I have a vhs video of water coming over the Tainter gates that the COE said never happened. Also have my initials painted under the Sarge creek bridge. Had to remove the seats and squat down in the boat well to get under there.
Currently the COE is going to release just about the maximum amount of water it can starting Saturday morning. A warning was issued by the COE of minor flooding in SE Ponca City and some roads leading into town from that direction.
Ranchers and farmers all the way to Keystone are moving livestock and equipment to high ground. All of the feeder creeks and rivers downstream will be backed up and remain flooded with water levels increasing Saturday.
I’ve got my equipment moved out and helped the neighbor get his livestock out as well.
We live below the dam a few miles with our house on a ridge, so no issues for us.

Hmmm, maybe it’s time to break out some limb lines and set them at the mouths of the creeks below the dam. The blues should be having a hey day.
It is 2 ft above max flood pool now. Almost to the road east of Kaw City. 35 1/2 ft above normal pool.Still a 100,000 cf coming in. Releasing 40,000 right now so still rising.
There are no creek mouths currently. Just big expanses of water In low areas. Inflow is down to 70,148 cfs but even with the Tainter gates open 4’ now, the discharge is 56394 cfs so it’s still coming up but at a slower pace.

Lake is finally dropping slow. Inflow is down below the release rate. Lake peaked at 36 1/2 ft high. Photo is of Sarge bridge. Might get under it with an intertube. Only lake access is people are unloading in the parking lot at Pioneer. All campgrounds are closed and main gates locked. Gonna be a long time before everything gets back to normal.
To show how bad it is, if you look down toward the end of all the debris, you can barely see the roof top on the entry gate house going into coon creek. All campround reservations have been cancelled until at least sometime in June for Coon, Sarge and Washunga.
For the folks in Ponca City that need minnows, the Red Barn has closed as we all know but there is a new bait shop on South Avenue between 13th st and 14th street on the North side of the road. They are basically a 2nd hand store but have minnows and worms. Sign out front that advertises bait.
I stopped and talked to the owner today. He is looking for more tanks to add Rosey's, perch, etc. Told me he had owned a bait store in the past.
I think his price was $3.50 per dozen.
