Default Ever seen one of these?

I've been lurking crappie.com for a bit now and enjoy the site. I caught this fish Thursday on the Verdigris, and was curious if any of you have seen one. I've been a pretty avid crappie fisherman for 15 years and have never seen one. Looked it up online, and I think it's a Magnolia crappie.

It's probably NOT a "Magnolia" Crappie ... but it definitely IS a Blacknose Black Crappie. Blacknose Black Crappie are just Black Crappie with a pigment marker gene that creates the black stripe, and they occur naturally in several states (and stocked in many lakes around the US).

A "true" Magnolia Crappie is a triploid hybrid that is a cross between a White Crappie and a Blacknose Black Crappie, and is (was ??) produced by Mississippi biologists for stocking small impoundments in the state. They're basically sterile, so stocking them in large lakes would be basically a wasted venture. And I have no knowledge of them being shipped to other states for stocking purposes.

Down in Texas, Ernest Paty named them Mohawk's. It's pretty well stuck and everyone I know calls them mohawks. I've caught them everywhere I've fished including Texoma. I'm thinking they must reproduce since I've caught them for a number of years, to the point they are no big deal anymore.

Blacknose Crappie. Have caught them from Grand Lake, Ft Gibson, Tenkiller, Eufaula, and even Wister. Like CrappiePappy stated they are black species crappie with a pigment marker gene which causes the black stripe.......Ranger

Very informative CP. The wife and I caught a couple of those fish two years ago on a weekend trip to Eufaula. I meant to ask some of the guys about them, but my old brain forgot.

I caught this one last year on Oologah. First time I'd ever saw one.

Thanks for the input everyone. I used they aren't as uncommon as I'd thought. Pretty neat looking though.
