Lakes In Danger Of Overflowing

Jas6199, I would highly recommend you have caps added to the tops of your pencils to keep them from slipping all the way through the sleeves. Our neighbor's dock had caps and during the flood of 2007, the caps caused his pencils to get pulled up from the mud. So he had the caps removed. Now with the flood this year, his pencils are down inside the sleeves and he is about to slide completely off the pencils. He's having extensions added to his pencils (like we are too) and he's having the caps added back to the top of them as well. It's better to pull the pencils up than to completely slide off of them. Besides, I don't think the pencils will come completely out of the mud - they may rise up some, but they won't clear the lake bottom (our pencils have buried themselves probably 10-15' deep into the mud (based on the 2 times Dad had extensions added to our poles over the 35 years the dock has been there).

I would tend to think that certain people think they know more than the professionals do. Don't try to play like you're Obama and know everything about everything. Believe it or not, the Corp is doing everything they can to keep the damage down. It's the whole purpose of the impoundments to begin with, not make someone with an xtra 100k laying around some place to go play on weekends (Unless you have a place on Grand). So regardless whether the Corp holds back 2-3' a month ago has little to do with it. Would you rather they starting dropping all lakes by 10' prior to the Spring rains?

Those who are whining about the high water because it effects your being able to catch fish, then I would suggest you learn how to find fish. They are still in the water, I promise! Now if you're the kind of fisherman that cannot find fish and depend on someone else to tell you where to try, then I guess you're going to be forced into staying home.

Spot on, Reaper! Last COE level I saw on TBird has it 0.12' from overflow. This much rain makes for tough decision that have to be made on a regional basis. I remember a some years ago the Corps had to open the Morganza waterway in LA, flooding several homes, to protect more homes from flooding downstream. I wouldn't want to have to make that call.

Without a doubt the corps are trying their very best to manage the water levels and flows . Having said that I think Mark is just irritated at the situation . The corps has in its history miscalculated and gambled and lost when it comes to Mother Nature . They aren't perfect and neither would we in that position . I enjoy the fact that mark takes the time to share his opinions on the forum . It's guys like him that make this site so great and enjoyable .

Everyone complaining should make a trip to Waterways expirment station in Vicksburg Ms run by the COE, they will teach you more about flood control in 30 mins than you thought you ever knew , i had an uncle who worked there 27 yrs, those guys know their stuff, they can show you what releaseing X amount of water in a particular area can do to an area 100s of miles down stream and not be off more than a few feet of rise and fall.

What ever are you talking about Robert? I merely wanted to point out that the Corps happen to be the professionals here. I myself am not qualified to tell someone how to do their job unless I have a lot of experience in that line of work.

However, I am certain that I would qualify to tell our POTUS how to do his job since he is a moron and I know everything. :biggrin
