Jas6199, I would highly recommend you have caps added to the tops of your pencils to keep them from slipping all the way through the sleeves. Our neighbor's dock had caps and during the flood of 2007, the caps caused his pencils to get pulled up from the mud. So he had the caps removed. Now with the flood this year, his pencils are down inside the sleeves and he is about to slide completely off the pencils. He's having extensions added to his pencils (like we are too) and he's having the caps added back to the top of them as well. It's better to pull the pencils up than to completely slide off of them. Besides, I don't think the pencils will come completely out of the mud - they may rise up some, but they won't clear the lake bottom (our pencils have buried themselves probably 10-15' deep into the mud (based on the 2 times Dad had extensions added to our poles over the 35 years the dock has been there).
