It's truly amazing how much water Southern Oklahoma, Arkansas and Northern Texas, Lousisianna has recieved just within the last week. Let's all hope the rains this weekend don't bring the inflows up much and give a little relief for some draining. Can you imagine just how bad it would be without all the flood control lakes?Quote:

There has been an average rainfall of approx. 15" so far for the month of May in the Poteau river basin. If they had dropped Wister down to the bottom of the conservation pool before the rains started, it still could not have held all of the run off.
Broken Bow, on the other hand, would still have some storage capacity left if they had not been holding water back for a maintenance project on the hydroelectric plant.
I saw on the news last night that Hugo is 25' over normal pool!!!!! Unreal!!!
Also, Texoma is expected to go over the spillway this weekend at 640'. This morning it is 635.61 and was gaining an additional 100,000 cfs. They have opened the flood gates, finally, but, only letting out 26,000 cfs. As Redge said, the reason is downstream flooding. It they let all the excess out, Shreveport would flood, along with everything else downstream in the Red River, probably all the way to the Mississippie River.
I totally agree, the Corp is doing all they can. You simply can't prepare for every possibility.
If you take a step back and look at the big picture, when we get this much rain over saturated ground, our lakes are like little puddles along these watersheds. Once they fill up... .

Reaper - You are right. NO ONE could predict the amount of rain ,accurately, that we would receive. Millions of dollars of property will be saved from damage by holding the water back and having a CONTROLLED release of water. We must focus on the greater good for all people.
