    Default Thinking on electronics

I am looking for new electronics and I am interested in the hum. 859ci HD Di combo and the Low. Elite-7 HDI. I don't think the side imaging is that important I could be wrong though. What is your all stake on both brands and advantages of SI and not having it.

    Thanks

i just rigged a new boat with 859 DI on front, and 899 SI on back. I was a nervous wreck spending that on electronics, 'till my wife said it was just one less gun! I tell you this, if catching some extra fish is worth money, then go for it. I threw one rod, with one bait in the boat to test out the electronics. Long story short... i side scanned a tree in 33 feet of water, saw this fish in the top, 6 feet down. turned around and make 5 cast's, caught two 13 inchers, and broke off my only jig. It's pretty neat what modern technology can do for you if you let it.
THat being said, the advantage to SI here is that i saw the fish from 150 feet away, and didn't spook them, with DI, i would have been over the top, and they were only 6 feet down, and would have probably scattered

I just installed a Lowrance HDS 9 Gen 2 Touch ( because my eyes needed a bigger screen). In my opinion side scan and down scan are must haves to keep from fishing where there are no fish. Crappie look like bright white lights with this unit on a christmas tree. You can precise tell exactly where they are as far as depth and distance from the boat. If they are biting, you drop you jig(s) down just a bit above them and let the party begin!

Can you tell the distance from boat to structure like a tree top 150 foot in front of the boat so you don't drive over it or know when your in casting range

I fish a Lowrance HDS8 and using it on SI when you see structure as a tree or pile all you do is hit your arrow key and scroll the X on the cursor to the structure and it will tell just how far it is from your boat. You can also go to split screen SI and DS and see it on both screens paints a very precise picture of said structure. Hope this helps

actually it scans to the side, hence side imaging. ie you can see 150' to either side of the boat, but not in front.
