I'm with Odie and the guys who support cheaper rods, braided line, and proper drag setting. If you don't have some already, get the Depth Hunter Power Pro. It is a braid with color coded marks that give you absolute depth control, without tying on strings or using magic markers. It is available on eBay at several sites. I use a small swivel tied to the braid with a Palomar knot, and add one or two 4 pound mono leaders. Otherwise I would be shortening my braid every time I put on a new jig.
Alternatively, you COULD tie loops in the braid and change jigs without cutting any braid. And the braid will straighten or break any jig hook you use if it gets hung in the brush or other lines.

Dont want to cook your grits, but what # braiad do you use? Most of the cdc members dont use a leader ( cant speak for all) whats the abvantage? I tie jigs on with a triple tied loop knot and if I cant bow & arrow it loose normally the hook will straighten. We kept a journal on lost jigs one year and only lost 5 total......and that's no fish story.

I use the 10/2 Depth Hunter. I don't know why, but I like using the leaders instead of the loops. I have four rods, so I can switch colors and jig sizes without retying. I have been planning on tying the way you described for two of the rods. My previous post described the same advantage that you pointed out. The only problem comes if the jig head gets wedged in the rocks or whatever, and you have to break the braid. That shortens your Depth Hunter, and you have a line where the markers are not true, unless you cut it off at the next 25 foot marker.

You sure you actually went fishing much? I straighten so many hooks out with braid, I end up breaking the hook from the constant bending them back.

I used to use a leader with braid but rarely do any longer, especially for Crappie. I sometimes use the loop knot and sometimes use fas-snaps just because I like to switch jig head colors sometimes. With the fas-snap I just tie it into the loop and can snap on or off the heads. I still use a flouro leader sometimes when fishing for other more spooky species. When I use a single jig I sometimes just clip off an inch or so of the braid and retie the head. Keeps the end of the line fresh.

I'll have to admit that I have tied the loop knots and straightened some hooks when using braid without the leader. And they can only be bent back so many times before breaking. I HAVE lost more jigs when using the leaders. Maybe that's why I use them. It gives me more reason to tie up a lot of jigs, rather than try to find something on the boob tube.

Get some Bonehead stick guards and STOP losing your jigs like Ranger said.

Mosts of my serious hangups come from hooksets. If the stick guards help from hanging on a hook set, then it can cause a missed fish. Most light hangups will just fall off or get on through the brush for me. It's all in the touch.

Lip, I have had some problem with the triple loop "with braid" when double dippin. The top knot, when bottom jig gets hung, will pull down to jig head. Have you ever had this issue?
