Thread: New rod/reel

Oh boy, this is really much more of a personal preference that depends on style of handle, spinning or casting, cost, length, material, ect. I can offer what works best for me and i am sure a lot of others will chime in also.

most of my set ups are 6' Falcon Bucoo rods ($90.00) and can be purchased at Bass Pro Shops. Reels are the Pflueger President reels Model 6925 ($60.00) at Bass Pro and my line is Viscous in 6 or 8 pound ($8.00) at www.grizzlyjig.com for a 1/4 pound spool.

Good Luck with your search. I have owned all sorts of rods from cheap to expensive and have tried all sorts of reels and line and the set up i mentioned is what works best for me.

I like my $20 Crappie Maxx spinning reel and $40 9' Crappie Maxx ultra light rod from bass pro. I use Vicious Panfish hi-vis line. Scored a couple 2960' rolls somewhere online for cheap. I looked at more expensive setups but just couldn't bite the bullet. I like the reel because it is small and smooth as can be. My wife bought me a Pro Angler Tackle 4' 6" dock shooting rod and I really like the way it feels. I will be getting a longer casting rod this year to replace my Crappie Maxx.

If you decide to go with the falcon let me know and I can save you some money.

I really like my Wally Marshall 10' slab shaker combo (44.95) but like the others have said it is really a personnel preference.

I have slip corked at Thunderbird and Hefner, and several Colorado high country lakes and have a couple of suggestions. I saw in an earlier post that you would be bank fishing so you really need a specialized type of rod. Like SC some of my favorites are the Falcon BuCoo but I use them from a boat and don't think they would work well slip cork bank fishing. At Hefner a bunch of guy use 10-14 ft rods but I find those too big and clumsy to use. Most any rod that would work well for the Smallmouth 'float n fly' fishing method work good for me when I slip cork. I find a 7' rod too short and a 10' too long. A few that work well for me are the ProAngler tackle 8' rod, a BnM 8' Duckworth 'float n fly' rod and a BnM 9' Roger Gant signature rod called "The Difference." They all work well pitching jigs to brush along the banks or wading in the Spring, as well, and while not cheap, they are moderately priced. Try not to get too flimsy a rod. A light to medium light action works well.

I find most decent quality spinning reels work well and have no special preferences - just need a good drag. I also use Viscous panfish in both hi-vis and clear most of the time. Good luck with your choice.

BoneHead Hi Vis in 6lb is the toughest I have found. I also use Vicious in 6 lb but it is softer and doesn't have the strength the bonehead has......Ranger

We are talking about a 15 to 25 dollar savings per rod buddy.

Sorry for the thread hijack minman but.....Ranger, if you haven't already, you might look at the Falcon 6'9" BuCoo spinning rod. They call it the drop shot but it works great on deep brushpiles.
