LMAO Peke, there are times that an anchor from a Warship wouldn't hold you on Eufuala!
There is no one "best" anchor. There are different anchors for different types of bottoms. You just have to try and choose a type of anchor that will work on the bottom where you think you'll be using it most.
I have a 20ft All Welded Aluminum boat and use 20lb river anchors or danforth type anchors if I know there will rocks. I'm thinking about going to a larger river anchor because at times, it won't hold!
I'm not fond of mushroom type anchors. I've always had better luck with others. When using a mushroom or river anchor, you do need to use a length of chain. It helps the anchors grab hold. The rule of thumb that I've heard most is to use a length of chain that is half the length of your boat. So you chain requirement would be in the 8 or 9 foot range. Honestly, I've always used what I had laying around and never worried about the length that much. I'd say my average chain is probably 7 to 10 feet.
If you go this way, I'd get a coated chain unless you don't care about scuffing up your boat.
I don't use chains on the danforth type anchors, in fact, the latest ones I bought from BPS stated not to use a chain.
