Thread: Spider-Rigging Tips

I have been looking at alot of folks posts and it seems like alot of people have luck with spider-rigging. I have never done this before but I think it would work great up at Grand where I am. I even think it would work great for sandbass too!

My question is do you guys normally put on jigs and troll with your trolling motor on a low speed, or do you use minnows and drop them straight down and stay stationary. It seems that if you used the trolling method, it seems that it is very prone to getting hung up quite frequently around areas with alot of brush. How do you overcome this?

I'm no expert at Spider Rigging by a long shot, but I do fish this way a lot. Most people will use 4 or more rods per person set up in rod holders designed to Spider Rig. These are the brand of rod holders I use for Spider Rigging.

A lot of people use different lengths of rods, but I think 12 footers are the favorite of many, myself included. Crappie George sells some goods ones and they are reasonably priced.

You can use jigs or minnows. For me, minnows seem to work early in the year better than jigs. The boat speeds that seem to work for me best is in the .03 to .06 range.

I'd suggest taking a trip with Eufaula Boy and having him show you first hand how to Spider Rig. The learning curve can be steep if you're just starting. EB can shorten that curve quite a bit!

And yes, if you fish around brush, you'll get hung up. I only use Spider Rigging on open water, like when I'm fishing creek and channel breaks. Otherwise, I slowly troll along with two jig poles in my hand patiently waiting for that THUMP!

I spider rig both minnows and jigs. Most of the time, but not always, I tip my jigs/ minnows. I move forward slowly, usually just bumping the boat forward, and then let it rest for a second or two.
I try different modes in movement to determine what influences the bite the best and then stick with it.

If possible book a trip with EB he can really help you out. I booked a trip last year and was very impressed! I don't think I have ever met a nicer guy and he knows what he is doing. We spent all day on the water at big E with EB and I think I only remember us getting hung up 1 time all day. Needless to say that blew my mind.
